This initiative aims to understand how flexible packaging from households can be recycled across the UK, improve and increase flexible plastic recycling infrastructure and provide critical support to supermarkets in giving value to flexible plastics so they are properly recycled, while independently tracking and verifying the flow of plastic materials for recycling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The FPF is a collaborative fund, established in May 2021 by five founding partners: <em>Mars UK, Mondel\u0113z International, Nestl\u00e9, PepsiCo <\/em>and <em>Unilever<\/em>. Since then, it has been joined by a further 15 UK consumer goods\u2019 manufacturers, including <em>Abel &amp; Cole, Ella\u2019s Kitchen, Kiddylicious<\/em>, and<em> Ocado Retail<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Technology_Behind_the_Scheme\"><\/span><strong>The Technology Behind the Scheme<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aldi\u2019s scheme was based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenback.earth\/en\/6_about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Greenback Recycling Technologies<\/em><\/a> and the implementation of <strong>eco<sub>2<\/sub>Veritas<\/strong>, an AI-powered evidence system designed to monitor the recycling process comprehensively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Eco<sub>2<\/sub>Veritas serves as the backbone of Aldi&#8217;s traceability scheme, tracking and certifying the quantity of flexible plastic that is collected, the sorting process, the resultant polymers, and the final destination of the recycled materials. This level of detail, not only ensures the integrity and transparency of the recycling process, but also facilitates informed decision-making and resource allocation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_the_Traceability_Scheme_Operates\"><\/span><strong>How the Traceability Scheme Operates<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Flexible plastic packaging is sourced directly from consumers, through strategically positioned front-of-store collection points, which create easy-access for consumers to dispose their plastic waste. Aldi&#8217;s approach emphasizes on <strong>traceability<\/strong> throughout the entire recycling journey, ensuring <strong>transparency<\/strong> and <strong>accountability<\/strong> at every stage of the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The flexible plastic material, after being collected, tracked and certified by eco<sub>2<\/sub>Veritas, the operating AI system, it is then entrusted to plastics recycler <em>Jayplas,<\/em> where it undergoes sorting into Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP). After sorting, the material is pelletized, and PE is used to make refuse sacks, while PP is used to make crates and trays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gareth Morton, Project Lead at <strong><em>Ecosurety<\/em> <\/strong>(which manages FPF), congratulated the collective efforts of Aldi, Greenback, and <em>Jayplas<\/em> in setting this innovative initiative into motion.
