Scotland had intended to launch its own scheme in March 2024, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/depositreturnscheme.zerowastescotland.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">postponed<\/a> for October 2025. The Government has now committed to a launch on <strong>October 2027<\/strong> for the UK scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UK_DRS_Details\"><\/span><strong>UK DRS Details<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Water and Rural Growth, Robbie Moore, <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-statements\/detail\/2024-04-25\/hcws427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced<\/a> on April 25th that the DRS would include polyethylene terephthalate (<strong>PET<\/strong>) plastic bottles and steel and <strong>aluminium<\/strong> cans, <strong>but<\/strong> <strong>exclude glass containers<\/strong>. Moore also explained that incorporating glass would create unwanted complexity and higher costs for the drinks industry and retailers, due to its weight and fragility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This focus on plastic bottles and cans is also driven by the high consumption and littering rates of these materials in the UK, and specifically the <strong>14 billion plastic drink bottles<\/strong> and <strong>9 billion drink cans used annually<\/strong>. Additionally, the UK Government expects the DRS to reduce drink container littering by 85 % within three years, even without the inclusion of glass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scotland is expected to adopt a similar system, while Wales plans to include glass in its collection.
