Effective from <strong>January 20, 2025,<\/strong> the ban extends to <strong>BPA&#8217;s salts and derivatives in products such as plastics, coatings, adhesives, printing inks, ion-exchange resins, silicones, and rubber<\/strong>. This regulatory action marks a significant change from the initial draft presented in February 2024, which originally overlooked certain substances like<strong> bisphenol S (BPS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scope_and_Exceptions_of_the_Ban\"><\/span><strong>Scope and Exceptions of the Ban<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The newly adopted regulation extensively restricts BPA and similar compounds but does allow for <strong>minimal exemptions<\/strong>. BPA can still be used in producing <strong>polysulfone filtration membrane assemblies<\/strong> and <strong>specific liquid epoxy resins for self-supporting food-contact articles exceeding 1,000 liters<\/strong>. These permitted applications are strictly regulated, requiring <strong>non-detectable BPA migration levels (below 1 \u00b5g\/kg)<\/strong> and <strong>mandatory cleaning<\/strong> of final products before food contact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8134 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.packlab.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/freepik__stacked-plastic-food-containers-and-metal-cans-on-__67601-e1737009363204-1024x719.png\" alt=\"bpa bps bisphenol a\" width=\"1024\" height=\"700\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inclusion_of_Other_Hazardous_Bisphenols\"><\/span><strong>Inclusion of Other Hazardous Bisphenols<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The regulation broadens its coverage beyond BPA to include other hazardous bisphenols and derivatives (listed in Annex VI, Part 3 of <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32008R1272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Regulation (EC) No. 1272\/2008<\/a> as category 1A or 1B carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic to reproduction or category 1 endocrine disruptor for human health). <strong>Use of these substances in food-contact materials is now banned unless specifically authorized.<\/strong> The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is tasked with publishing <strong>guidelines by January 2027<\/strong> to outline how manufacturers can seek authorization for such substances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regulatory_Changes_and_Industry_Impact\"><\/span><strong>Regulatory Changes and Industry Impact<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Significant amendments have been made to the EU Plastics Regulation (Reg. No. 10\/2011). <strong>BPA and BPS have been removed from Annex I<\/strong>, severing their previous regulatory permissions. This change was unexpected, as the initial draft did not propose the removal of BPS, leaving industry stakeholders without the chance to comment on the implications. Additionally<strong>, BPS does not benefit from the transition periods granted to BPA<\/strong>, potentially resulting in immediate enforcement of the ban on BPS-containing products.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU&#8217;s decisive move to ban BPA and related hazardous bisphenols in food-contact materials underscores a robust commitment to public health.
