The Returnable Packaging Scheme
The pilot scheme seeks to enlist 20 businesses across both urban and remote areas of the Highlands. Participants will use a QR code-based app to offer customers reusable packaging options at the point of sale. This packaging, which includes cups, bowls, tubs, and pizza boxes, can be returned to any participating business. The scheme is designed to foster circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of Scotland’s packaging waste.
Building on Previous Success
This initiative derived from the success of the Highland Cup Movement by Keep Scotland Beautiful, which saved over 1,000 single-use cups from landfill using the same technology. The HCWP’s new pilot scheme will leverage this success to expand the use of reusable packaging in the region.
Supporting Local Businesses
Businesses joining the pilot will receive a pool of reusable packaging and support for setting up and running the scheme. This includes staff training and campaign materials to engage customers in the #ChooseToReuse campaign.
Local businesses have expressed their support for the new scheme, while Peter Simon, Managing Director at Vytal, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainability and the importance of preserving the natural landscapes of the Highlands for future generations.
Conclusion
HCWP and Vytal’s partnership represents an important milestone for sustainable consumption in Scotland. By promoting reusable packaging, the initiative aims to reduce waste and foster a more circular economy.
The pilot scheme is now open and will run until December 2024. Businesses interested in participating can find more information and sign up on the Keep Scotland Beautiful website.
