The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are set to make history, not just in athletic performance but in environmental sustainability. Organizers are taking significant steps to reduce the event’s environmental footprint, including the innovative use of recycled materials, making this year’s games to be the greenest ones yet.

Recycled Plastic Seats
The standout feature of the Paris 2024 Olympics is going to be the use of seats made from recycled plastic. Approximately 11,000 seats for two different venues, the Arena at Porte de la Chapelle in Paris and the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Saint-Denis, will be crafted from plastic waste. This initiative is a collaboration between Paris-based recycling company Lemon Tri and eco-construction firm Le Pavé.
Overcoming Challenges
This ambitious project faced significant challenges, including disruptions in the supply of virgin materials. However, those challenges were the reason for the organizers to turn towards sustainable solutions, demonstrating their resilience and innovation. The process of transforming plastic waste into seats involved extensive testing for fire and UV resistance, and mechanical durability to ensure safety and functionality.
The Recycling Efforts
The plastic used for these seats comes primarily (80 %) from the Seine-Saint-Denis area, where it is collected, shredded, and processed before being transformed into seats. The project also involved local schools, where around 5 million colored soda bottle caps were collected, promoting public awareness and participation in recycling processes.
Other Sustainable Practices in the Olympics
In addition, the 2024 Olympics are implementing various other eco-friendly measures. Electricity for the games will largely come from renewable sources, while the Athletes Village will feature an underground water-cooling system to reduce energy consumption. Moreover, the event will offer “low carbon” menus, highlighting dishes with less meat to further reduce the carbon footprint of the Olympics.
Inspiring Future Games
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are setting a new standard for sustainability in large-scale events. By turning waste into a useful resource, the organizers are not only reducing the environmental impact of the Olympics, but also inspiring future initiatives, like the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.
